EMA Recognizes Five Mineral Companies for Outstanding Commitment to Safety

WASHINGTON, DC, Oct. 19, 2023 – The Essential Minerals Association (EMA) today announced the companies and mining operations receiving its annual Safety Achievement Awards. The recognition program is run in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and were presented at EMA’s annual Fall Conference and Fly-In.

“Safety is the number one priority of every single EMA member,” said Chris Greissing, EMA president. “Our employees are our most precious resource; without them we wouldn’t be able to provide minerals that are essential for virtually every aspect of our lives. I’m proud to present these awards to five EMA members who have gone above and beyond in demonstrating their commitment to safety.”

EMA’s Safety Achievement Awards recognize the best reportable injury rate for an individual EMA member company’s entire operation across all of the mines they operate in North America and for an individual EMA member company site location. Awards area made by size of operations as well: large company (700,000 or more employee hours), medium company (100,000 to 699,999 employee hours), and small company (fewer than 100,000 employee hours).

The 2022 Company Safety Achievement Awards were presented to:

• Tata Chemicals North America, Sandy, UT, Large Company
  1,344,246 employee hours with 6 injuries, for an all-injury rate of 0.89 per 200,000 employee work hours

• Sibelco North America, Charlotte, NC, Medium Company
  290,519 employee hours with 0 injuries, for an all-injury rate of 0.00 per 200,000 employee work hours

• IMI Fabi, Benwood, WV, Small Company
  90,573 employee hours with no injuries, for an all-injury rate of 0.00 per 200,000 employee work hours

The 2022 Mine Safety Achievement Awards were presented to:

• Tata Chemicals North America, Tata Chemicals Mine, Sweetwater, Wyoming, Large Mine
  1,344,246 employee hours with six injuries, for an all-injury rate of 0.89 per 200,000 employee work hours

• Imerys, Imerys Sylacauga Operations, Sylacauga, AL, Medium Mine
  566,221 employee hours with 0 injuries, for an all-injury rate of 0.00 per 200,000 employee work hours

• Mississippi Lime Company, Shelby, Alabama Lime Plant, Calera, AL, Small Mine
  99,426 hours with zero injuries, for an all-injury rate of 0.00 per 200,000 employee work hours
