Magnet fishing has surged in popularity as a recreational activity that combines treasure hunting with environmental cleanup. A few weeks ago, dozens of scooters, bikes, and even a shopping cart, covered with mud, started lining up on the banks of the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C. Puzzled residents were mystified by how they got there and where they came from. In the following days, I – and I think a lot of DC residents – became aware of just what magnet fishing is.

What is Neodymium? 

Neodymium is a rare earth element, one of 17 chemically similar elements found in the Earth's crust. Despite the term "rare," neodymium is relatively abundant compared to other rare earth elements. Extracted mainly from minerals such as monazite and bastnäsite, neodymium is integral to creating strong permanent magnets. 

Neodymium magnets are a blend of neodymium, iron, and boron (NdFeB), resulting in extraordinary magnetic strength relative to their size. These magnets are used in a wide array of technologies, including electric motors, wind turbines, headphones, and medical devices. In magnet fishing, their power and durability make them the ultimate tool for pulling metallic objects from underwater environments. 

Why Neodymium Magnets for Magnet Fishing? 

When it comes to magnet fishing, strength matters. A high-quality neodymium magnet can generate enough force to lift hundreds of pounds, enabling it to retrieve heavy or deeply submerged metal objects. Its resistance to demagnetization ensures long-term effectiveness, even in challenging conditions like muddy rivers or saltwater. 

Moreover, neodymium magnets come in various shapes and sizes tailored to the hobby. Some are circular for general use, while others are double-sided, increasing the chances of a successful catch. Their compactness makes them easy to transport, further enhancing their appeal for outdoor enthusiasts. 

Treasures Found with Neodymium Magnets 

The thrill of magnet fishing lies in the anticipation of discovery, and neodymium magnets have unearthed a wide range of items. Hobbyists often retrieve objects with historical, practical, or monetary value, such as: 

  • Historical Artifacts: World War II-era weapons, old tools, and coins are common finds, offering glimpses into the past. 
  • Valuables: Safes, jewelry, and bicycles have been pulled from rivers and lakes, surprising even seasoned fishers. 
  • Everyday Items: Keys, fishing equipment, and tools like hammers or wrenches frequently appear in magnet fishers' hauls. 
  • Environmental Cleanup: Beyond treasure, magnet fishers often recover scrap metal, cans, and other debris, helping to clean waterways. 

One notable example is a magnet fisher in the U.K. who uncovered a bag of grenades from the early 20th century, prompting a visit from bomb disposal experts. In the U.S., magnet fishers have recovered antique firearms and even a motorcycle submerged for decades, and one couple in New York City found a safe containing $80,000.

Beyond Fishing: The Many Uses of Neodymium 

While neodymium’s strength shines in magnet fishing, its applications extend far beyond this hobby. Its role in renewable energy, advanced electronics, and medical innovations highlights its importance in modern life.
