Arlington, Va., July 23, 2024 – Today, the Essential Minerals Association (EMA) issued the following statement regarding the introduction of the Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024 by Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and John Barrasso (R-WY):

“A recent study highlighted the fact that it takes 29 years to develop and permit a mine in the United States, and much of that time is taken up by our overly burdensome federal permitting process. And those lucky enough to obtain permits then face years of dilatory litigation,” said Chris Greissing, EMA president. “Permitting reform, such as this legislation introduced this week, is much needed to ensure our domestic mining industry is able to deliver a supply of the essential minerals we need for everyday life and the transition to the green economy.

“Our inefficient permitting process limits investment in the U.S. mining sector, which causes the nation to be reliant on foreign – often hostile – nations,” Greissing added. “This legislation is a good start at much-needed comprehensive permitting reform. We thank Chairman Manchin and Ranking Member Barrasso for their leadership in bringing this legislation forward. EMA looks forward to working with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle as this bill moves through the Senate.”

The Essential Minerals Association (EMA) is the representative voice for companies that extract and process a vital and beneficial group of raw materials and minerals, which are the essential ingredients for many of the products used in everyday life.
